Property owners encouraged to find, remove invasive plant species

The week of Feb. 26-March 3 is National Invasive Species Awareness Week and the Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society is encouraging local private land owners to survey their property for invasive plant species and begin the process of removing them.

“We suggest that people use plant identification apps such as Picture This or Seek by iNaturalist,” a release stated. Invasive Species Fact Sheets for identification and control are also available from the Department of Conservation and Recreation at www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/invsppdflist.

“We also encourage all Virginians to contact their local, state and national legislators to advocate for the inclusion of policy and legislation geared toward increasing the capacity for invasive species managers to ensure that all public and private lands and waters remain resilient in the face of climate change and other resource challenges,” the release stated.
