Around 40 people attended a design public hearing held by the Virginia Department of Transportation last Wednesday on the proposed construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Twiggs Ferry and Buckley Hall roads in Cobbs Creek. Held at the Mathews Family YMCA, the meeting gave Mathews residents a chance to review plans for the roundabout, ask questions, and offer opinions. Mark Kutz of Powhatan, who visits Gwynn’s Island frequently, said he approves of a roundabout at the intersection because it can be “a little scary when making a left-hand turn with all the traffic coming.” He said a roundabout was recently completed in Chesterfield near his home “and now the traffic keeps moving in a nice steady flow.” Roxanne Yarina of Dutton said she was torn about the proposal because “people don’t know how to use roundabouts,” while her husband Frank said, “I’m liking it, mainly because people don’t know how to use stop signs.” Faeq Fasihi, project manager with VDOT consultant Jacobs Engi...
