To mark the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the members of the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary held a memorial run on Saturday morning at Mathews High School. Sixty-eight runners took part in the event, with the Mathews High School Marching Band performing the National Anthem, as well as the anthems of the U.S. military branches. “Time moves forward, but we will never forget,” said Patrick Billups, who was master of ceremonies for the event. “We run to remember; we run for those who cannot.” A moment of silence was held at 8:46 a.m. (the time on Sept. 11, 2001 that American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center), with the run immediately following.
