The 75th anniversary of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 66 was celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 29, with a brief but meaningful ceremony at the Mathews Yacht Club at Hudgins. Speakers outlined the history of the flotilla and highlighted those events. One such significant event was recalled by James Thomas, Commodore of USCG Auxiliary, East District—Southern Region, who was one of two keynote speakers. Thomas said that shortly after the second plane hit the twin towers in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, he and auxiliary member Tom Edwards got calls from U.S. Coast Guard Station Milford Haven in Mathews saying that the active-duty personnel from the station were shipping out and heading to New York and that a team was needed to man Station Milford Haven. “We packed our bags and got there,” said Thomas. “And the auxiliary team ran Coast Guard Station Milford Haven for 93 days.
