MHS girls return to state’s Final Four after quarterfinal win Tuesday

The Lady Devils are headed back to VCU’s Siegel Center in Richmond.

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team earned a repeat trip to Richmond to compete in the state Final Four tournament, following wins over Northumberland and William Campbell.

With last Thursday’s win over the Indians, the Devils recaptured the Region A title; Tuesday’s victory over the Generals in the state quarterfinal match secured a spot for Mathews in the Group A, Division I Final Four.

Mathews is scheduled to face the Region D champions from Rye Cove, on Friday starting at 12:30 p.m. The winner of that match returns the next day to face the winner of the Bath-Nelson game for the state title. Last year, Mathews lost three sets to one to Bath County in the state semifinals.
