EPA grant to fund remote monitoring of marsh vegetation

The William & Mary Batten School and Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s Center for Coastal Resources Management has received a grant for $118,318 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.The funding will be used to provide critical data to support the remote monitoring of marsh vegetation to enhance tidal marsh management and inform restoration activities, said a press release from the EPA.The project involves VIMS building a framework for improving its capacity to remotely monitor marsh communities, as well as building a library of drone imagery with identification of plant communities.The project is being funded along with other wetland projects proposed by nine states and universities in the Mid-Atlantic region, said a press release.Total funding is $2.55 million to support EPA’s goals of protecting and improving water quality, preserving existing wetland habitat and increasing wetland acreage, and ensuring that states are able to monitor and assess the health of their ...
