Mathews golf team opens season

The Mathews High School golf team opened its season on Aug. 24 against King William.

"Although we didn’t win the match, some players were encouraging, with Chris Lyell leading the way with a 41," said head coach Nick Naglieri. The next day, MHS faced off against Middlesex and Rappahannock. Once again, Mathews didn’t win, but this time, Corbin Smith shot a nice 42 to lead the way, followed by Jacob Jackson with a 46.

On Tuesday, the Devils faced off once again with Middlesex, losing to the Chargers for a second time. "We seem to struggle with our putting, but I am sure things will improve," Naglieri said.

"I really don’t expect the team to compete as a team, but I do feel a few individuals will make it to regional play and possibly state competition," the coach added.

The Devils are scheduled to host King William at 4 p.m. today at the Piankatank Golf Club.
