Mathews clinches top seed in tournament

 

Six seniors on the Mathews High School varsity volleyball team closed their regular season careers last Wednesday with a convincing straight-set victory against Middlesex. The Lady Blue Devils defeated the visiting Lady Chargers, 25-4, 25-22 and 25-17.

With the win, Mathews enters the Conference 42 tournament as the #1 seed. Mathews was scheduled to host King and Queen last night, with West Point facing Middlesex in the other semifinal. If Mathews wins, the Lady Devils will host the winner of the Pointers-Chargers game tonight.

Seniors Hailey Abernathy, Kayla Carter, Whitney Eriksen, Anna Hudgins, Hannah Rowe and Jacqueline Stewart were honored along with their parents by head coach Pat Moughon and the home crowd. During last Wednesday night’s ceremony, it was announced that the senior class had compiled an overall record of 103 wins against only eight losses during the past four years.
