The June primary election marked the end of guessing who the candidates will be for the November general election. Tuesday, June 17 was also the filing deadline and ballots are now set for state, district and local elections.
In Gloucester, three district seats are up for election on the board of supervisors and three on the school board.
For the board of supervisors, the Petworth District candidates are Joseph Atkins “Joe” Leming and Angelo Andriulli. Shannon Lee Hanson is running unopposed for the York District seat, and at-large candidate Brian Bayford will be challenging incumbent Kevin M. Smith.
For the school board, incumbents Anita F. Parker and Carlton L. Drew are running unopposed in the Petsworth and York districts, respectively. Only at-large incumbent Fred A. Brewer Jr. is being challenged, by S. Nicole McPherson, who served as the interim at-large member for four months at the end of 2023 after Kellie Lockerby resigned.
In Mathews, where all supervisor and school board seats are at-large, two seats are up for election. For the board of supervisors, Republican incumbents David S. Jones Sr. and Mike S. Walls will face off against Patrick J. Beattie, who ran for the board unsuccessfully as a Republican candidate in 2009 and 2011, and David W. Walsh.
Three candidates are vying for the two school board seats that are up for election in Mathews: incumbent Linda G. Hodges, Amy L. Bohannon-Stewart, and Antichella “Shelly” W. Forrest.
House of Delegates
All Virginia House of Delegate seats are up for election this year.
In the 68th District, which covers most of Gloucester and all of Mathews, as well as Middlesex, King and Queen, King William and Essex counties, the Republican candidate is incumbent Keith Hodges. He will be fending off a bid by Democrat Elaine G. Walters.
The 69th District, which covers Gloucester Point and portions of York and James City counties and the City of Newport News, has three candidates: Republican incumbent W. Chad Green, Democrat Mark C. Downey, and independent Valerie D. Beverley.
Statewide offices
Statewide, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears is the Republican nominee for the office of Governor of Virginia. Former U.S. Representative Abigail D. Spanberger is running as the Democratic candidate.
For the office of lieutenant governor, the candidates are Republican John J. Reid II, a radio show host, and Democrat Ghazala F. Hashmi, state senator for Virginia District 15.
The attorney general candidates are incumbent Republican Jason Stuart Redding Miyares and Democrat Jay C. Jones, a former member of the House of Delegates.
In-person early voting in this year’s election will begin on Friday, Sept. 19, 45 days prior to the Nov. 4 election. Those who wish to vote have until Tuesday, Oct. 14 to register.
