Local beaches being monitored for bacteria levels

The Virginia Coastal Beach Monitoring and Notification Program is monitoring Gloucester Point Beach in Gloucester, Festival Beach in Mathews, and Yorktown Beach by taking water samples weekly through September.

All presently have acceptable bacteria levels, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

When beach samples indicate an unsafe level of bacteria, the health department issues beach advisories to let the public know when there is a higher risk of waterborne illness, a release said.

The Virginia Department of Health Beach Map is updated weekly with results of beach monitoring at www.SwimHealthyVa.com.

Now that beaches are open, the public is reminded by follow social distancing recommendations and to avoid groups of 10 or more people, in addition to the usual precautions of enjoying a beach, the release said.
