Jayvee Devils drop two

The Mathews High School jayvee volleyball team had a rough opening of the 2010 season, following losses on the road to New Kent and Windsor.

The MHS girls fell to the AA Trojans of New Kent last Thursday. Due to many missed serves in both sets, the Devils made it very difficult to keep themselves in the competition. With New Kent’s gym being much larger than their home gym, the Devils depth perception was a little shaken, serving most of their balls out of bounds too deep. The girls lost in two straight sets, 25-15 and 25-18.

On Tuesday night, the Windsor Dukes were a very good matchup for the Devils, but unfortunately Mathews was unable to prevail. In two hard-fought sets, the Devils lost, 25-21 and 25-22. In this match the Devils served much better than in the previous match against New Kent with a total of 11 aces, led by Jackie Stewart and Whitney Eriksen with three each, followed by Anna Hudgins and Isabelle Turner with two each, and Haley Sullivan with one.
