GHS doubles team advances to regional play

The Gloucester High School doubles team of sophomores Christine Riddett and Olivia Edwards has advanced to the Eastern Region Tennis Tournament and is scheduled to compete Monday at Huntington Park in Newport News.

The pair placed second in doubles in the Peninsula District Tournament last week. This marked the second number-two finish in doubles for Riddett.

In district singles play last Thursday, Riddett lost to Kayla Kale of Heritage 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and Edwards fell to Claire Spencer of Menchville 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals. Riddett had defeated Kale earlier in the season.

As a team, the district champion Lady Dukes faced Cox High School of the Beach District on Monday in regional play. All of the Gloucester players fell to their Cox opponents and, except for Riddett and Edwards, are done for the season. With no seniors in the lineup this year, the team looks to repeat its district title next season.
