Flounder fishing ‘hit or miss’ in local waters

Flounder for fishing turned tough again this week, according to Jerry Thrash with Queens Creek Outfitters, Cobbs Creek. "It was hit or miss one day to the next," he said.

However, Thrash reported that croakers are available in the Buoy 42 area and over to Buoy 40A.

"Over the weekend in the winds, we caught croaker to 12 inches off our dock with the grandkids, along with small speckled trout, spot and puppy drum," he said.

Spot averaging a half-pound are being caught off Gwynn’s Island, Butlers Hole and the Spike, he added, while the first reported yellow-bellied spot were caught around New Point on Sunday.

In other news, Thrash reported that Spanish mackerel and bluefish were also hit or miss from Windmill Point south because of huge areas of red tide coming down the Rappahannock. He said the red tide is affecting the waters beyond R1 and south to Gwynn’s Island and the Hole-in-the-Wall.
