Events begin this week to commemorate the 250th anniversary on July 4 of the Declaration of Independence, and of the historic period of that document. Here is a rundown: Thursday, June 25 Sidney Ripley of the Gloucester Museum of History speaks at Gloucester Library, Main Street Center, at 6 o’clock on “Age of Style, Age of Change.” Her topic is the fashion and style of the 19th century. Friday, June 26-Friday, July 31 An exhibit “Americana” featuring artwork covering patriotic themes, nostalgia and history in various media will be hung at the Art Speaks Gallery, Bay School, Mathews. Saturday, June 27 The Gwynn’s Island Festival will be held all day at Gwynn’s Island Park, 1996 Old Ferry Road, Gwynn, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and will give special emphasis this year to the island’s place in history, when Virginia’s last colonial governor, was driven from the island and from the colony forever in the Battle of Gwynn’s Island, July 9-10, 1776.
