VIMS to hold programs on fishing

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science will hold two programs this month about recreational fishing.

A Discovery Lab about sport fishing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, at the Gloucester Point campus.

VIMS graduate student Willy Goldsmith will explain how he uses pop-up satellite tags to track open-ocean fish in this family-friendly program, a release said. Saltwater game fishes found in the Chesapeake Bay include striped bass (rockfish), red drum, cobia, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and flounder.

An After Hours Lecture about the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at Watermen’s Hall. VIMS Marine Recreational Specialist Susanna Musick will describe why the fishing program is important and offer tips on the “do’s and don’ts” for handling the fish you release.
