Construction was completed yesterday on a new bridge on Route 14 (Buena Vista Road/Adner Road) over the Poropotank Creek at the Gloucester County/King and Queen County line, and the road was reopened to through traffic Thursday afternoon, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Virginia’s State of Good Repair program funded the estimated $3.4 million bridge replacement project. Vehicles of all legal weights are permitted to travel over it.
Through traffic on Route 14 was detoured for approximately six months during construction. The new two-lane bridge is located on Route 14 approximately one mile west of the intersection with Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway).
The new bridge provides four-foot road shoulders, and new pavement and guardrail was added on the bridge approaches.
The previous bridge over Poropotank Creek was built in 1938 and was structurally deficient. It was posted with a vehicle weight limit of 27 tons for single-unit vehicles and 40 tons for tractor-trailers. Around 4,900 vehicles a day travel on Route 14 in the project area. The project contractor was Bryant Contracting, Inc.
