North End Bridge repair work begins Monday

Work is scheduled to begin Monday on the repair and enhancement of the North End Bridge on Route 14 in Mathews, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced.

The project, less than a mile from the current bridge replacement on Route 3/14 at the Gloucester/Mathews line, means that travelers will be navigating two 35-mph work zones for much of the rest of 2025. Between these projects, the speed limit will be 45 miles an hour.

In addition, the bridge work at North End, located between Bookers Lane and Plantation Road, will require the use of temporary traffic signals, with one-way traffic in force through the work zone.

The $3.5 million project includes replacement of the bridge superstructure, which is intended to improve safety and extend the life of the 76-year-old two-lane bridge.

The temporary traffic signals will be activated into flash mode on April 25 and become fully operational on April 25. Starting April 28, a vehicle width restriction of 10 feet will be posted.

The work is due to be completed in June 2026, VDOT said.

Work at the bridge replacement at the county line will continue until its planned completion in November.
