MHS volleyball team heads to final four

Mathews High School volleyball players advanced to the semifinals of the Group A Division II State Volleyball Championships with a three set sweep of Goochland at MHS Tuesday night. The unbeaten Blue Devils won by 25-15, 25-23 and 25-14 to earn their third consecutive trip to the state Final Four.

The win takes Mathews to the Siegel Center at Virginia Commonwealth University for a 4:30 p.m. Friday match-up with Auburn. The winner will advance to the final at the Siegel Center on Saturday.

Maddie McCann had 18 kills against Goochland and Mackenzie Moughon tallied 17. Hannah Rowe and Rachel Close contributed two each and Teeny Robbins hit the game winning kill. Close made it nearly impossible for Goochland to put the ball away, with a stunning 32 digs for the night. McCann tallied 20 digs, Moughon had 18, Kacie Austin had eight, Robbins and Shelby Ware had seven each and Rowe had one.
