MHS rowers win nine races at home

The Mathews High School crew and its parent volunteer group hosted 18 other high school rowing teams Saturday at Williams Wharf for the 26th annual Mathews High School Crew Regatta.

The day dawned with fair skies, light winds and pleasant temperatures that combined to help make a most successful and well run regatta with an estimated crowd of over 3,000 people. Mathews had a good day, entering 22 races and netting 18 medal results, including nine first-place ribbons, two seconds and seven third-place finishes.

The men’s team also won the 2014 William F. Owens Point Trophy with a 68.8 percent efficiency rating, followed by First Colonial (58.8 percent) and Great Bridge at 55.3 percent. For the Catharine K. Owens Women’s Point Trophy, Hickory’s ladies turned in a 60 percent efficiency score, followed closely by Great Bridge (59.2 percent) and James River with 55.9 percent.
