Mathews falls to Red Devils, 71-51

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team dropped its second game of the season to Lancaster on Saturday, as the visiting Red Devils posted a 71-51 victory.

Lancaster jumped out to an early 15-7 lead, extending it to 34-13 by halftime. Mathews narrowed the gap somewhat in the third quarter, but Lancaster held on to pick up the win.

C.J. Kelly was the top scorer for Mathews, ending the night with 16 points. Deondre Foster was close behind with 14. Michael Cunningham also made it into double digits, scoring 10. Rounding out the scoring were Nick Stump with seven, and Ross McLaughlin and Carter Vrooman with two points apiece. The varsity boys improved significantly from the line, scoring eight out of 11 shots.

Mathews last played Lancaster on Dec. 7. In that contest, MHS was able to hold the Red Devils to 59 points. The final score of that game was 59-48.
