Jayvee Devils open soccer season

The Mathews High School jayvee soccer team kicked off its 2011 season with a good mix of returning veterans and new talent. Coming back from last year’s squad are Amanda Smith, P.J. Johnson, Jessie Zeller, Ryan Jackson, Hunter Wood, Keinan Triplett and Megan Zeller.

New to the team are Anna Hudgins, Adam Wade, Brian Simon, Sam Spadaccini, Jack Vrooman, Gus Bauby, Dillon Roane, Hans Saunders, and Justin Jenkins.

The team didn’t start the season very strong, losing on March 18 to Essex, 7-0. "They just weren’t hustling," said coach John Zeller. Hudgins, Vrooman, and Jenkins each had two shots on goal.
Two days later, Mathews traveled to Montross to face Washington and Lee. The team worked hard during the first quarter and the game was tied, 1-1. During halftime, Hudgins and Johnson pumped up the team, and talked about being more spread out on the field. Johnson scored three goals, earning his first hat trick of the season.
