GHS boat takes fifth at Scholastic Nationals

The Gloucester High School crew sent three boats to the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championships in Camden, N.J., on May 26 and returned with a fifth-place winning women’s junior four.

Several team changes were made for the national event. The successful women’s senior four of Kristen Hickman, Elizabeth Keane, Kendall Worland, Elaina Arsenovic and coxswain Matt Hendrix became a junior four by replacing the senior Hickman, who is headed to row at the University of Alabama this fall, with junior Gabby Lauer. Hickman, instead, rowed as a single.

The reworked junior four, after only three days of practice together, placed second in its heat in 6:13.18 and third in the semifinal in 5:50.23. In the final, the Gloucester girls had a time of 5:58.76 for a national fifth-place finish.
