Festival council members concerned about lack of autonomy

Last week, the Gazette-Journal reported that a majority of the members of the Gloucester Daffodil Festival Council had resigned after it was decided that the group would remain under county leadership and not move forward as a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Bob Beyea, who was chairman and a longtime member of the council, took time Monday to explain how the council arrived at its decision. He said it stemmed from a majority of the members being worn down from three years of conflict with county leadership.

According to Beyea, the conflict between the county and council members was a result of two factors, the first being that while the rules and regulations imposed by the county worked great for county business, it didn’t work so well for a festival that has grown to the size of the Daffodil Festival, he said.
