Gloucester PRT offers classes, activities this summer

The following classes and activities are being offered by Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism:

BEGINNER BELLY DANCE: Belly dance classes for ages 16 and older are being held on Mondays from 7-8 p.m. through June 29 at Beaverdam Park’s Whitcomb Lodge. An intermediate belly dance session begins in July. The fee is $65 for the 8-week session or $9 per drop-in session.

FREE FLOW YOGA: Free Flow Yoga classes are held on Tuesdays in June from 5:30-6:45 p.m. at Whitcomb Lodge. The fee is $40 for the whole month or $9 per drop-in session.

SALTWATER FISHING: A Kid’s Saltwater Fishing Workshop for ages 12-15 will be held on Saturday, June 13, at Machicomoco State Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fee is $15 and the deadline to register is June 6. A Kid’s Summer Fishing Tournament will be held the following day, Sunday, June 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Beaverdam Park. Prizes will be awarded based on age divisions and shore/boat divisions. The fee is $15 and the deadline to register is June 7.

PICK-UP BASKETBALL: Adult pick-up basketball will be held on Friday evenings in June and July at Ark Park with ongoing registration and drop-ins welcome. For ages 18+.

THE FULL HIKE: The Full Hike, an approximately nine-mile hike from one end of Beaverdam Park to the other, will be held on Saturday, June 20, beginning at 9 a.m. The registration fee is $5 and the deadline is one week before the hike.

PARK AFTER DARK: Park After Dark will be held on Friday, June 26, from 8-11 p.m. at Beaverdam Park’s main entrance. Participate in fishing, boating, biking or hiking after hours. All activities require head lamps. The fee is $5 and all rental fees apply; the deadline is June 19.

PLAY ALL DAY VA: Gloucester PRT is celebrating the longest day of the year as part of the Play All Day VA initiative by the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 21, at Beaverdam Park. Enjoy many activities for kids and adults including Sunset Yoga with Kim. Other activities include painting rocks, making wooden ornaments, and creating a Father’s Day craft as well as terrarium making. This program is free, but you are asked to register online by June 20.

SENIOR BINGO: Bingo for ages 50 and over will be held on Wednesday, June 24, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Stewart Building. Winnings are prizes, no cash. The fee is $10 and the deadline to register is June 22.

DOLPHIN WATCHING: A Best Years Trip to Virginia Beach for dolphin watching is set for Wednesday, July 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is $70 and the deadline to register is June 24.

KIDS’ YOGA: A brand-new kids’ yoga program will be held this summer. Little Lotus Yoga (for ages 3-5) is from 5:30-6 p.m. and Mighty Minds Yoga (ages 6-11) is from 6:15-7 p.m. These six-week sessions are held on Fridays from July 10-Aug. 14 at the Stewart Building. The fee is $50 and the deadline to register is July 3.

FRESH FLAVORS: Fresh Flavors: Summer Edition will be held on Wednesdays in July from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Stewart Building. Celebrate the flavors and creativity of the season with a hands-on class. Enjoy learning to cook delicious seasonal dishes perfect for this summer. These sessions are available for individual sign-ups with a $15 fee. The deadline to register is the Monday before each class.

DRAWN TO NATURE: The Drawn to Nature Camp for ages 11-17 will be held July 27-31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. In the four-day nature journaling camp, participants will create nature journals documenting the plants and animals of the Gloucester County parks. The camp will take place across the Gloucester County parks, and it will include special guest talks from the Virginia Master Naturalists and VIMS.

GYMNASTICS CAMP: Two weeks of two-day gymnastic camps will be held in July at Botetourt Elementary School. Ages 6-16 meet Monday and Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. Ages 4-5 meet Tuesday and Thursday from 5-6:15 p.m. Students will work on bars, beam, floor, vault and trampoline. The fee to register is $85.

JUNIOR KICKERS: Gloucester PRT is hosting Junior Kickers soccer camps for ages 6-15 the week of July 13-17 at Abingdon Park, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Coaches will guide players through fun drills, skill-building activities, and team games that help players develop both technique and confidence on the field. The fee is $60 per camp and the deadline to register is July 5. Goalie camp for ages 9-15 will be held July 20-23 at Abingdon. The fee is $60 per camp and the deadline to register is July 12.

JUNIOR BALLERS: Junior Ballers: Basketball FUNdamentals camp for ages 6-9 (co-ed) will be held July 27-30 at the Ark Park outdoor basketball court from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The fee is $60 and the deadline to register is July 19.
