The Mathews High School wrestling team placed 11th out of 19 teams in last weekend’s Ram Rumble at Lafayette High School. The tournament was run along the same lines as the state championships, and the competition is tougher than the Group A state tournament, according to head coach Tom Holaday.
Mills Godwin won the tournament with 188.5 points, followed by Chancellor (174 points) and Grafton (169 points). Ten MHS wrestlers took part, with three placing, as the Blue Devils earned a total of 78 points.
Freshman Caleb Miller (103 lbs.) and senior C.W. Sorey (171 lbs.) placed second in their respective weight classes, while senior Russell Reed (152 lbs.) finished fifth.
Miller went 3-1 in the two-day competition, pinning Will Mihansly of Lafayette in the first round, scoring decisions over Joe Cafiero of Chancellor in the quarterfinals and Jordan Lincoln of Mills Godwin in the semis.
