The Mathews High School soccer team closed out its 2011 season with losses to King William and West Point and a 6-1 win over Windsor.
On May 19, the Devils hosted King William, losing 2-1. The lone MHS goal was scored in the second half by Grant Avery, with Ryan Morgan providing the assist. Will Sease led the team in shots on goal with six, followed by Morgan (four), Avery (three), Jacob Johnson (two) and Chris Barnhardt, Tyler Tillman and Ben Wood (one apiece). Carter Vrooman had 17 keeper saves.
The following day, Mathews traveled to Windsor, beating the Dukes, 6-1. Goals were scored by Sease (two), Glenn Musgrove (two), Morgan and Matt DeForge. Morgan had two assists while Jamie van Emmerik had one. Sease led the team in shots on goal with 12. Vrooman made three saves as the Mathews defense controlled Windsor’s attack.
On May 22, the Devils held a fundraiser alumni game, which was a huge success. The current Blue Devil team took on a team of MHS alumni, winning 3-2. Tillman scored two of the three goals for the varsity team. Avery scored the other goal, with an assist from Morgan. The alumni came back in the second half, with Tommy Morris and Eric Johnson scoring.
The Devils’ season ended on May 23 at West Point, with Mathews falling 3-2. Morgan provided the only scoring for Mathews, with goals off a Tillman assist and a penalty kick.
Mathews ended the year with 29 goals and over 200 shots on goal. Vrooman amassed over 100 keeper saves in his final season with the Devils. The team will also lose six other seniors—Brad Joselyn, Sease, Avery, Barnhardt, van Emmerik and Morgan.
Sease and Barnhardt earned first-team all district honors, while Morgan and Musgrove won second-team all district. Barnhardt also received all region honorable mention.
