This weekend’s Gwynn’s Island Festival will offer more than its traditional celebration of community, local culture and family fun. According to organizer Jan Bassett, the 2026 festival is also a meaningful opportunity to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary and reflect on a pivotal moment in Virginia history. “This year’s festival stands apart in the long tradition of Gwynn’s Island Days,” Bassett said. “We gather not only to celebrate the spirit of community, though that spirit remains the heart of everything we do, but to honor a moment of profound national importance.” The festival coincides with the 250th anniversary of both America’s founding and the historic Battle of Cricket Hill, fought on July 9-10, 1776, not far from the Civic League grounds where many of the festivities take place on Friday and Saturday. “We are honored to host this commemoration,” Bassett said. “For generations, the Gwynn’s Island Festival has welcomed neighbors, families, and visitors who share a love ...
