Hands Across Mathews and Mathews County Social Services joined forces on Tuesday, Aug. 14, for the annual Fresh Start shopping trip, which gives students the opportunity to purchase clothing and other necessities for the upcoming school year.
Thirty children participated, each accompanied by an adult volunteer shopper on the morning bus trip to Gloucester’s Walmart, said a press release. Twenty-five of the children were funded by Hands Across Mathews, while five were funded by the Mathews Family YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program.
The $4,000 in Hands Across Mathews funding was donated by Central United Methodist. St Paul’s United Methodist Church Willing Workers Class, Westville Church Disciple Men, Westville Christian Women, Westville Christian Church, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock and anonymous donors.
Fresh Start Coordinator Peggy Leigh said it was a pleasure to help these children get off to a good start for the new school year.
