Youth archeology program Saturday

Archaeology Day for Kids will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Tompkins Cottage Museum on Brickbat Road in Mathews.

The Mathews County Historical Society is partnering with Fairfield Foundation to introduce children of all ages to the history of the county that lies buried in the dirt, said a press release.

Highlights of the day include finding artifacts, washing them and perhaps mending them where possible. In the past, Native American artifacts, as well as a Civil War era minie ball, have been found in the courthouse green area.

Mathews Cub Scout Pack 124 will participate in the event.
