Woman pleads guilty in child’s death

In a plea agreement in Mathews Circuit Court Wednesday morning, a 25-year-old Mathews County woman from North pleaded guilty in the scalding death of her 1-year-old son.

Miranda Dawn Gilbert, 25, of North pleaded and was found guilty of felony murder, defined by Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Bowen as “accidental killing of a person during the course of a felony,” in the death of her one-year-old son, Brayden Nikolaus Blenaru.

She was also found guilty of felony child abuse or neglect leading to serious injury and felony child abuse or neglect with reckless disregard for human life.

Gilbert will be sentenced by Judge Jeffrey Shaw, who presided over Wednesday’s hearing, at 9:30 a.m. on March 27, 2019.

Gilbert was arrested on Feb. 1 and had been charged with three counts of felony child abuse, in addition to the second-degree murder charge.
