West Point man in custody after escaping from counseling center

A West Point man, in police custody and being evaluated at the Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck Counseling Center in Ark Friday afternoon, escaped custody but was located nearby about three hours later.

Xavier Brown, 24, allegedly assaulted both of the New Kent Sheriff’s Office deputies who were escorting him and ran out of the center and into the woods north of it at about 2:45 p.m.

Law enforcement officers from Gloucester, New Kent, Virginia State Police and Virginia Marine Resources, with canine and air support, set up an extended perimeter and located Brown just north of the center at 6:10 p.m., according to GSO Capt. John Schick.

Brown was charged by the GSO with two felony counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer and two misdemeanor counts of obstructing justice.
