It looked to be a close game in the first half, but Kecoughtan’s football team pulled away in the third quarter and went on to beat Gloucester, 36-14, on Friday at Darling Stadium.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Warriors passed for two touchdowns and added a two-point conversion for a 15-0 lead. Gloucester got on the board when James Scott took the ball 80 yards for a score late in the first half to make it 15-7 at the break.
Kecoughtan put together another scoring drive in the third quarter and tacked on two extra points. The Warriors also recovered a Gloucester fumble, one of six fumbles lost by the Dukes, and returned it 65 yards for another touchdown and a 30-7 lead.
In the final quarter, a Scott pass intended for Jackson Lowther was intercepted and returned 70 yards for another Kecoughtan TD. In the final minutes of the game David Miller took the ball in from seven yards out for a second Gloucester touchdown to make it 36-14.
The Dukes put up 385 yards of total offense, compared to 259 for the Warriors, but the fumbles and a pair of interceptions hurt their effort. Scott, who has over 1,000 yards on the season, was held to 91 yards while teammate Tyler Banks rushed for 83.
On defense, Troy Shackleford had a quarterback sack for the Dukes and Banks had an interception and a fumble recovery. Gloucester, 1-8 overall and 1-7 against Peninsula opponents, is scheduled to host Menchville to close the regular season Friday.
