VMRC to consider Milford Haven oyster cage proposal again

The issue of oyster aquaculture cages in Milford Haven has again reared its head, as a Virginia Marine Resources Commission hearing is set for Tuesday. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the VMRC office, 380 Fenwick Road, Building 96, Fort Monroe.

The initial proposal by the late Kevin Wade called for 700 cages in a 600’ by 400’ area of the haven and has since been taken up by Wade’s widow under the corporation Damfino LLC. As was the case with the initial hearing, this application is protested by numerous residents of the area.

VMRC Director of Shellfish Aquaculture Leasing and Mapping Ben Stagg explained that “It was determined that the Wade permit, which was issued to Kevin Wade, could not be transferred upon his death.” Stagg stated that the Army Corps of Engineers did however transfer its permit, so no new authorization is required in that respect.
