VDOT to replace Route 198 bridge beginning this summer

Construction is expected to begin late this summer on a bridge superstructure replacement on Route 198 over Harpers Creek in upper Gloucester County.

Kelly Hannon, spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said Tuesday that Bryant Contracting, Inc., of Toano has been awarded a $1.3 million contract for the project.

Work will include a new bridge deck, guardrail and bridge approaches. Specific start dates will be finalized after meetings with the contractor.

One lane of traffic will be open during the construction period, Hannon said, which is expected to be completed in May 2016. Traffic will be switched from one lane to the other midway through the project.

The average daily traffic count for Route 198 in that area is 2,400 vehicles per day, she said.

In other road news, Hannon said the Commonwealth Transportation Board recently adopted its Six-Year Improvement Program, which included two Gloucester projects and one in Mathews.
