USNS Zeus

The USNS Zeus, the only active cable laying/repair ship in the U.S. Navy, was spotted cruising through the York River last Thursday. The vessel, which is 500 feet long and 73 feet wide, was delivered to Military Sealift Command in 1984. Though planned to be the first of two ships of her class, the second ship was not built, leaving Zeus as the only ship of her class. She is capable of laying 1,000 miles of cable at depths of up to 9,000 feet without resupply.
