Transition from three to two schools begins to take shape

Beginning Monday, the public will see the first changes as Mathews County Public Schools transitions from three schools into two. Starting this fall, Mathews Elementary School will become a preK-7 institution, with Mathews High School remaining for grades 8 through 12. Next school year, while Thomas Hunter Middle School will still house some classes, the remaining space will be used for school administration offices. On Monday, the first changes will become visible, with the TMHS office relocated to Mathews Elementary. MHS senior Ella Ward, the school board’s student representative, first brought up the issue during her report to the board. Thomas Hunter students will continue to enter and exit the building at the start and end of the day as they have in the past. After 8:30 a.m., any student entering the school will have to enter from Mathews Elementary, and parents who pick up their children early will have to go through the elementary school as well.
