The new Eldridge N. Cook Career and College Navigator Suite was officially dedicated in a special ceremony at Rappahannock Community College’s Glenns campus last Thursday. Cook [1915-2014] of Bena owned and operated Cook’s Oyster and Seafood Company on Sarah’s Creek for more than 70 years. An operation that began with only one truck developed into a fleet that moved seafood through East Coast ports. The company eventually grew so much that it reached to parts of Europe. “At its peak, that operation employed nearly 250 people who had steady work and a paycheck because of what Mr. Cook built,” said RCC president Dr. Shannon Kennedy to the assembled crowd of Cook’s family, friends, as well as community members and RCC staff. “And when the oyster industry began to change, as industries do, he didn’t fold up and walk away,” continued Kennedy. “He adapted.
