Flock camera forum Aug. 27 in Mathews

A public forum will be held tonight in Mathews on the use of Flock Safety Cameras. The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is holding the forum at 6 o’clock tonight, Thursday, Aug. 27, at the courthouse, 10622 Buckley Hall Road. The forum follows public concern regarding the use of Flock cameras around the country, including Mathews County. Frequent concerns include misuse of the Flock system, infringement of constitutional rights and the safety of citizen data. Sheriff April Edwards will discuss how the cameras are used, the information captured, data retention policies and timeframes and officer accountability measures for database searches, specifically in Mathews County. In Mathews, the cameras serve as a supplemental tool and are utilized “as part of an active criminal investigation, missing or endangered persons, outstanding warrants, stolen vehicles, human trafficking investigations and drug trafficking investigations,” said Edwards.
