Traffic to be detoured next week on Providence Road for drainage pipe replacement

Traffic on Providence Road (Route 636) at Ordinary will be detoured next week during daytime hours for replacement of a drainage pipe near McKinney Lane.

A release from the Virginia Department of Transportation said the detour is scheduled to begin Monday and end Friday. Providence Road will be closed to through traffic near the intersection with McKinney Lane between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., and re-opened to traffic at all other times.

The work will involve installation of a new 19-inch by 30-inch culvert to replace a deteriorated 18-inch drainage pipe underneath the road. Signs will be posted to guide motorists along the recommend 5-mile detour route: Route 633 (Cedar Brush Road), Route 635 (Piney Swamp Road), Route 614 (Hickory Fork Road). Message boards will also notify motorists of the upcoming daytime road closure on Providence Road and detour.

VDOT said an average of 1,200 vehicles a day travel on Providence Road, according to a recent traffic count.
