The Gloucester County school division is not alone in facing facility challenges due to natural disaster or other unanticipated emergencies this year. Several other schools in the Commonwealth have also been damaged since April, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

In Gloucester, an April 16 tornado targeted Page Middle School, tearing off its roof and destroying about a third of the building. Sixth and seventh graders who would have been at Page are now sharing Peasley Middle School, while eighth graders from both middle schools are in modular classrooms on the Gloucester High School campus.

On April 28, another tornado destroyed the roof of Glade Spring Middle School in Washington County. Storm hail shredded the roof of Valley Institute Elementary in Washington and Van Pelt Elementary in Bristol. Both school divisions were able to complete repairs over the summer.
