Tavern 1642, an elevated pub offering signature dishes and strong drinks inside the historic setting of The Inn at Warner Hall, opens to the public this evening, Thursday, May 21, at 4750 Warner Hall Road, Gloucester.
Hours are 5–9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, walk-ins only.
The tavern is named for the year Augustine Warner I settled the land, said a press release. It offers gathering spaces on plush leather couches around a large wood-burning stove and on an outdoor terrace with sunset views of the Severn River.
The menu of elevated classics, made with locally-sourced ingredients, includes such selections as Rappahannock River Company oysters; Bay Crab Dip made with Boursin, Crystal Hot Sauce, and Old Bay Ritz; Roasted Brussels Sprouts with bacon vinaigrette and Whitley’s peanuts; the signature Warner Hall Smashburger with caramelized onions and special sauce, and more.
“Each dish takes a modern, seasonal approach to traditional tavern fare,” said the release.
The tavern’s custom, hand-carved bar has a curated selection of bottled local beers, craft cocktails, and American whiskeys, including The Inn at Warner Hall’s hand-selected and proprietary bottling of Eagle Rare 10.
Tavern 1642 features the handwriting of two Warner Hall descendants, Meriwether Lewis and George Washington, showcased in a letter from 1799 concerning Washington’s distillery pursuits, along with a 1776 Continental Army commissary list and a signed receipt for spirits.
Tavern 1642 is a place where “visitors and Virginians gather to relax and share the Inn’s legacy of storytelling while raising a glass,” said the release, adding, “don’t worry—these walls don’t talk.”
