Saturday was National Honey Bee Day, a day set aside for beekeepers, beekeeping clubs and associations, and honey bee enthusiasts from across the United States to celebrate honey bees and recognize their contribution to humans’ everyday lives as a means of protecting this critical species. Gloucester’s Brent and Becky’s Bulbs hosted the Colonial Beekeepers Association in a daylong event, allowing people to see honey bees up close, enjoy honey tastings and visit with local vendors, who had their honey for sale. A highlight of the day was the honey bee extraction demonstrations, where they saw how honey is removed straight from the comb. The beekeepers even let spectators learn about the process first hand.
