Suspicious blaze damages abandoned church building

An abandoned church in Maryus was reported ablaze last week, with arson investigators from the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office now examining the scene of the suspicious fire.

Abingdon firefighters were called to the vacant Church of God building in the 2500 block of Guinea Circle on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 7.There were no injuries, although there was some structural damage to the building.

Members of the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue were called to the fire at 6:47 p.m. and remained on scene until about 9 p.m. One EMS unit responded, along with two fire engines, one quint (a combination pumper), one tanker, and 15 firefighters. Firefighters used approximately 400 gallons of water to put out the flames.

“There was a small amount of fire by a window of the church and the fire was brought quickly under control. There was minimal smoke and fire damage to the church,” said AVFR captain Drew Luellen.
