Summer art camps

Summer art camps start in just a couple of weeks at the Bay School Community Arts Center in Mathews, and sign-up is already underway.

All camps are on a “Pay What You Can” basis. Those who can’t afford the camps pay nothing, while those who can pay more to help someone else may donate to the scholarship fund.

The classes begin on Wednesday, June 11, with an all-day camp for children ages 10-13 on the art technique known as pointillism. Students will learn about the process of using dots to create works of art and about about some of the most famous artists who used the technique, including Van Gogh, Seurat, and Signac. The cost is $50.

On Friday, June 13, students from 12 to 17 years old will be able to participate in the all-day class Create Your Own Junk Journal. They will use recyclable materials and print-making techniques to create works of art through collage. The cost is $55.

A four-day camp for Littles will be held from June 16-19, with children ages 4-6 getting messy while focusing on the process of creating art rather than the final project. The cost is $50.

Children ages 7-10 will have a four-day camp, Mermaids Myths and Legends, from June 24-27, where they’ll explore mermaid legends and create a mixed media mermaid on a wood and a mermaid shadow box. The cost is $125.

The final June camp will be Techniques in Art for ages 7-12 all day on Saturday, June 28. Students will go over tone, line, form, types of shading, what materials are best for creating an art piece, and more. The cost is $50.

Summer camps will continue throughout July and August, with a variety of 2D and 3D art for children up to age 17.
