Substation fire causes 10,000 to lose power

An equipment fire at Dominion Energy’s substation at Hayes caused about 10,000 people throughout Gloucester County to lose power Sunday afternoon into the evening. A large plume of smoke from the fire piqued the interest and concern of residents and passersby, with photos shared on social media.

Dominion spokesperson Janell Hancock said there was an equipment problem at the substation that was reported at 4 p.m. Sunday. “The cause is still under investigation, so I don’t have any details on that just yet,” Hancock said.

However, she did confirm that the 10,000 customers that lost power were all restored by 7 p.m. Sunday. “So, it was no more than three hours for the last customer to be restored,” she said. She also confirmed that no one was hurt as a result of the incident.
