STEPHEN ‘STEVE’ MARK HOTALING

It is with extreme sorrow that the family of Stephen “Steve” Mark Hotaling, 63, announces Steve left this earthly life surrounded by the love of his wife and children and went to his heavenly home to be with Jesus on April 11, 2022, after a cruel and courageous battle with colon cancer.

Steve was born in Titusville, Pa., on Aug. 7, 1958 to Bernice Louise and Frank Willard Hotaling Sr., the oldest of three children. He attended Virginia Tech where he met his wife of 40 years, Patricia “Pat” Jane Hotaling, and went on to have two children, Stephanie Lauren Thorne, and Kyle Patrick Hotaling. He retired from Newport News Shipyard after more than 40 years; there he was known to take his coworkers under his wing, show them the ropes, treat them like family, and feed them a home-cooked meal.

He will be forever missed by his wife, Pat Hotaling; daughter, Stephanie Thorne (Josh); son, Kyle Hotaling; grandchildren, Arabella Thorne and Asher Thorne, and brother, Frank Hotaling Jr., who will continue to honor his legacy by living life to the fullest, finding joy in the everyday, remembering his quick wit, and passing down his beloved recipes and passion for cooking.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Frank Willard Hotaling Sr., and his granddaughters, Emmeline Lucy Thorne and Coralie Jane Thorne.

He was a godly man, a man of integrity with a strong work ethic, an uncomplaining peacemaker, a caring and providing husband, a selfless and giving father, and an extraordinary grandfather, Pop Pop. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved his Arabella (Abba/his mini Boo) and Asher (Booga Booga). In his free time, you could typically find him antiquing, “junking,” at an auction or flea market or in the kitchen cooking delicious meals with his mini Boo, Arabella, by his side.

A Celebration of Life will be held at BridgePoint Church, 10487 Harcum Road, Gloucester, Va., on April 30, 2022 at 10 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to a ministry dear to his family’s heart, The Fix Ministry at 109 Commons Park Circle, Manquin, Va. 23106, on his behalf.
