Spot, flounder, croaker and a few bluefish have started to show up in local waters, according to Chuck Ashe with York River Feed and Fishing Supplies, Inc., Gloucester Point.
He reported that Stacy Crossley caught a 9-pound, 14-ounce speckled trout for a citation in the Ware River. He also reported the following red drum releases: Troy Tillage with a 56-inch fish; Granville Tillage with a 54-inch fish and Joe Berberich with a 53-incher.
Flounder fishing has improved somewhat in the Buoy 42 and Cell areas, according to Jerry Thrash with Queens Creek Outfitters at Cobbs Creek.
"We weighed one citation this week from that area and it was brought to the store amid a limit of fish, several of which were over five pounds," Thrash said. "Other weigh stations in this area also weighed citations. While some anglers have had limit catches, others continue to struggle for dinner."
Cobia, he said, are being caught around New Point and at York Spit on live eel and live spot.
Croaker and spot fishing have been good in the Piankatank River, around Gwynn’s Island and in the creeks, Thrash added. Fish are medium-sized.
Finally, he said spadefish in the six-pound range have been boated at the Cell and larger fish are breaking lines but no citation fish have been seen yet.
Thrash reported the following citation: James Pitts of Sparta with an 8-pound, 3-ounce flounder he caught last Tuesday while fishing near Buoy 42.
