Smaller post offices seeing reduced hours

Due to a reduced operating budget, the U.S. Postal Service has already shrunk hours of service at a number of smaller Gloucester and Mathews post offices.

Onemo Post Office is next up, with its hours of service open to the public to be cut effective Monday.

Michele Martel, district communications coordinator for USPS in Richmond, said Monday that the changes are all part of the Post Office Structure Plan (POST Plan) which was initiated in 2012 “in order to preserve the nation’s smaller rural post offices.”

“There are no plans under the POST Plan to close any post offices,” Martel said.

However, Martel said, each of the affected post offices will be reevaluated annually to consider “a change in economic conditions, customer usage of the post office or other factors” that might determine a further reduction in hours or possibly an increase in operating hours.
