Six candidates vie for Northam’s seat

Mathews County Democrats and Republicans have three hopefuls each to choose from when selecting a candidate to run in a special election to fill the seat to be vacated by state Sen. Ralph Northam, who was elected last week as lieutenant governor.

A caucus to choose the Democratic candidate will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mathews County School Board office on Church Street.

Republicans will choose their candidate between 3 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, at Mathews Memorial Library on Main Street.

Neither the Virginia Board of Elections nor the Mathews County Registrar’s Office is involved in this political party-based selection process. Those who wish to participate will not be able to file absentee ballots, but must actually be at the designated site during the hours set for the caucus.

Candidates had to file their intent to run for office by Wednesday, Nov. 13. No date has been set for the special election.
