Severe weather this week

A series of severe thunderstorms packed a punch on the Middle Peninsula Monday evening, causing some downed power lines and trees in isolated areas. According to Mike Dutter, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wakefield, many of the stronger storms contained gusty winds. However, he said there was no indication of circulation or the formation of a tornado on radar. At the height of the storm, about 1,500 customers in Gloucester and Mathews were without power, according to Bonita Harris, spokesperson for Dominion Energy. Areas with the most outages included Zanoni and neighborhoods off Belroi Road in Gloucester.
